Pakistan Observes ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on 31st May

Every year World No Tobacco Day observes with a focus on targeted agendas. This year World No Tobacco Day has focused on the environmental damages caused by the excessive use of tobacco. The members of the World Health Organization had created this day in 1987 to draw world attention towards tobacco and the associated deaths. The theme of this year is related to ‘Protect the Environment.’ The day has a significant importance since it costs around 8 million people across the world. The research studies indicated that on average regular and active smoking reduces your life expectancy by 13 years which is significant and dangerous to the world population. According to the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), if the government increases the prices of cigarettes, it will increase the number of quitters. In Pakistan, majority people use cheaper brands Capstan, Morven Gold and Gold Leaf. This may damage their health and become the root cause of many diseases.

Cigarettes cause around 84,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Its smoke emits greenhouse gases affecting the ozone layer. Thus, this year WHO brought it into the headlines for environmental damages.
